A Guide to Working with Hematite for Protection

Everything you need to know about working with hematite for complex spiritual protection through intuition and metaphysical practice.

Over the last year or two, hematite has become one of my most-worked-with stones. I initially bought a pendant (from my absolute favorite metaphysical shop in Nashville, Cosmic Connections) and wore it around my neck for “protection.” One of my favorite tarot readers from YouTube had mentioned how protective it is, and I thought, “it’s time to explore its properties,” which are a little more complex to work with than, say, black tourmaline, which is pretty and helpful for beginners.

What I didn’t realize was how complex working with hematite can actually be. What I learned isn’t something I've found in any of my go-to spirituality books.

In this article, we’ll explore the intricacies around working with hematite for different purposes and how protection can have many different meanings. Hematite protects you differently and sometimes in a tough-love kind of way if you’re not intentional about how you approach it.

What Is Spiritual Protection?

Overall, spiritual protection is the phenomenon of being divinely guided and safe on your life path. We all have access to spiritual protection, whether we acknowledge it or not. In my experience, we all have a team of spirit guides and angels, helping us along.

Spiritual protection doesn’t mean that bad things will never happen to good people. It simply means that you are held while on your path, and if you go off your path, you are still held, and spirit will continue to provide clues to help you back on your path. You must simply pay attention and listen to see them and then take action. Therefore, aligned action is part of protection, and you have a role in your own spiritual protection.

Spiritual protection can also include grounding or simply being present with your body and the Earth with an energy circuit completed so that you don’t feel chaotic.

Protection can also come in the form of absorbing or deflecting negative energy from external sources and can feel good because knowing you’re protected increases your sense of safety.

However, protection can also come in the form of protecting you from yourself. For instance, if you want to be on your highest-potential life path and have asked for spiritual protection of your path yet keep making choices that (consciously or unconsciously) sabotage your ability to be on that path, protection can come in the form of an upheaval or loss that may feel negative in the moment, but is really the blessing of a divine redirection.

Making yourself smaller or cloaking yourself so you can fly under the radar can be protection in some circumstances. Perhaps you don't want to draw attention to yourself because society is unaccepting of your lifestyle, or perhaps you have an abuser in your life and you need to be cloaked energetically in order to get out of a bad situation. Making yourself invisible is a form of protection, and I believe spirit guides help with this when asked. However, once you are in a safer place and it’s important to be seen in order to succeed in your dreams, the cloak must come off. This means that what was once protected no longer serves you and can even become harmful if held onto for too long. Protection then transforms into the uncloaking, which may feel counter to what you’ve known and experienced before as safe.

Therefore, when you start wanting and asking for spiritual protection, it’s important to know it comes in many forms and it’s not always comfortable. As you become highly protected, your definition of safety must ebb and flow with how you want to proceed in life.

Hematite tends to show you your growth edge and deals in the not-always-comfortable types of protection.

Properties of Hematite

There are different forms of hematite. The one we’re working with today is specifically the polished silver variety. While individual polished silver hematite stones all have similar properties or qualities, it’s also true that each individual stone may have its own energetic signature and personality within the identity of being hematite, just like we do as humans.

While this is a general guide, always be sure to get to know your stone before working with it and really sit with it and get a sense of its personality. In general, however, polished silver hematite is physically:

  • Shiny

  • Reflective

  • Has a bright side and a dark side

  • Hard, dense, non-porous, non-absorbing, and metal-like

  • A common iron ore

Metaphysically speaking, these physical properties translate into energies such as:

  • Introspection

  • Resilience and strength

  • Finding truth in duality

  • Shining light in the darkness

  • Deflecting negativity rather than absorbing

  • Going back to basics

Other varieties of hematite exist, including raw silver/gray or red stones, and this shifts not only their physical properties but their energy and metaphysical properties slightly.

To learn more about the metaphysical properties and other uses of hematite not detailed here, I highly recommend the book, The Crystal Bible: A Definitive Guide to Crystals by Judy Hall.

How to Work with Hematite

When working with any crystal, stone, or even herb for that matter, you can take into account the properties of the tool you’re working with and think about how those properties signify in life. For example, if you think about how hematite is reflective like a mirror, you can easily deduce that this stone can be helpful in mirror work. On the other hand, hematite is also shiny and can reflect light, meaning it can shine light on truth in the darkness. These are just two examples, but this is how I’ve worked with hematite and is exactly how I arrived at the information below.

Programming Hematite with Your Intentions

When you’re ready to start working with hematite, ensure you’ve cleared the stone of any residual energy from the store from which you obtained it. If you found it in nature, you may not want to clear energy, especially if you enjoy and benefit from the energy of the land in which you found it. But, for most of us, we’ll be getting hematite at a metaphysical shop.

Once you’ve cleared it, you can set your intentions in your mind while holding the stone, or you can say the intentions out loud as you're putting on a necklace or placing the stone in your pocket or somewhere else on your person.

Examples of intentions I’ve set include:

  • “Help me see the truth in all situations I come across today.”

  • “Help me deflect negative energy directed at me from others today.”

  • “Return to sender what is theirs and allow me to keep what is mine.”

  • “Let’s see in others what I need to know about myself.”

  • “Let others see what they need to see in me today.”

You’ll notice that none of those intentions are simply, “Please protect me today,” or “Help keep me protected.” Those are valid intentions, and I’ve gone that route many times. But without specifying the specific hematite property or strength you want to draw on, that leaves it open to the Universe and the stone to bring protection in whatever form is for the highest good. Of course, you’ll always want to include in your intention that it’s for your highest good and the highest good of all, but the more general intention can sometimes feel less gentle if you’re not emotionally prepared for the type of protection that comes. That said, you can also ask for gentle and kind protection regardless of whether you get more specific or not.

It’s not right or wrong to leave the method of protection up to the stone and the Universe and your spirit team. A level of trust exists with that type of request that can be freeing. Similarly, it's not right or wrong to embrace your hematite’s properties and leverage them according to your own spiritual development goals.

You can change your intentions as often as you’d like. I tend to stick with the same intention for several months at a time until it feels like the work is complete on the current level, but you can re-charge it daily or weekly as you see fit.

Using Hematite in Mirror Work

You can use hematite like a mirror for protection and I’ll detail how in this section. If you’re not already familiar with mirror work, check out Witchcraft is Real and Finally Coming Out of the Shadows to learn more about it and more about the power of ritual in general.

Being a Mirror for Others

You can program your silver-polished hematite with a statement like mine: “Let others see what they need to see in me today,” and in doing so, you become a mirror for others to see themselves.

This is different than allowing others to project their needs, wants, wounds, experiences, and fears onto you. Instead of absorbing their energy and being what they need you to be, you become a harder, reflective surface that bounces their own light and shadow back at them to see.

This could look like someone recognizing herself in your behavior. She gets to briefly experience what others feel when she behaves that way, and if she’s lucky, she also gets to realize that’s what she’s experiencing, especially if she’s a thoughtful person who has a positive impact largely. Conversely, these realizations can happen for someone who largely has a negative impact as well. If the person who sees themselves in you

Another way people see themselves in you is when you tell your personal story and demonstrate characteristics or personality traits they also share. It can help people realize they can love themselves, be inspired to take action, or that if you can accomplish a dream, they now have proof that they can do it too.

Therefore, being a mirror also means you’re a catalyst for change.

While being a mirror for others can result in you being a comfort to others, it can also result in you being a harbinger of truth that can be triggering for those who are deeply wounded or not aware of their healing journey. If someone becomes triggered as a result of interacting with you and seeing a part of themselves they're not ready to face, this could result in losing that connection or at least experiencing distance with that person for a while, depending on where they’re at in their awareness and healing. Perhaps they’ll realize what’s happening and start processing their own wounds and face their shadows. Perhaps they won’t. Make sure you’re okay with this outcome if you intend to be a mirror.

The spiritual protection comes in the form of good karma for you. Being a catalyst for change, whether it’s for someone who’s healed or not, is a service to humanity.

Others Mirroring Important Information for You

When you set the intention of: “Let’s see in others what I need to know about myself,” you are knowingly entering into your own shadow work. Everything that I said about being a mirror for others? It now applies to you; only people in your life are the catalyst for your change, not the other way around. Even if they don’t know it, if they take part in helping you heal and evolve, they’re racking up good karma, so you are, in a sense, protecting them while also working on yourself. And I consider shadow work protection for your identity and growth. It keeps you from being stagnant. Also, if you decide you need boundaries or space with someone because they’re too triggering, then you’ve invited more alignment into your life, which is also a protective act.

Inviting Reflection

You can also program hematite to help you with self-reflection or introspection. In this case, you don’t have to rely on other people to mirror yourself back to you, but instead, you may just request assistance with an easier flow of understanding of yourself and who you are, what you really want and dream of—or even perhaps what a recent dream means in terms of your next step on your path.

Inviting Deflection

If you want what we typically think of as protection when working with metaphysical tools, deflection is likely the closest type of protection hematite supports. When you program it with statements similar to “Help me deflect negative energy directed at me from others today,” you’re invoking an effect that is much like the evil eye symbol. Basically, you’re creating a shielding energetic bubble that bounces negative energy off of you. When the negativity bounces off, it doesn’t lodge into your energetic system, and therefore it doesn’t influence your mood or perceptions as easily. In this scenario, you can also call in your spirit guides to help transmute that negative energy or ask Mother Gaia to take it in and transmute it into something beautiful and life-sustaining. If you’re feeling particularly strong, you can also choose to be the vessel that transmutes the energy into something positive, through your actions, writing, or thoughts even.

When you take it a step further and program hematite with a statement similar to, “Return to sender what is theirs and allow me to keep what is mine,” you’re not only deflecting negativity, but instead of transmuting it, you’re choosing to give it back to whom it belongs. Sometimes people worry about racking up karmic debt when they invoke return-to-sender energies, but if someone is truly sending you negativity that they generated, you do not have to take it on as yours. Sending their negativity back to them doesn’t mean you have to react negatively to them (for example, cutting down someone who trolled your comment section), if you don’t want to. Sending their negativity back to them just means you’re not internalizing their energy and you’re not necessarily giving your energy to clean up their mess. When it reaches them instead of lodging into you, they’ll need to look at it, and perhaps it will help them learn to spend their own energy on being kinder or bettering themselves instead of tearing someone else down.

However, if you put negativity out into the world and are receiving it back from others, a return-to-sender intention set with your hematite could amplify what you’re putting out into the world, but turned back to you.

That’s why I say hematite is an advanced stone to work with — you must be healed enough and aware enough of your own energy for it to not backfire on you. If you don’t feel like you’re there yet, you can start by using hematite to find clarity and truth instead of going straight to a return-to-sender intention. This, combined with internal reflection, can assist in your own processing of your wounds so you may heal them. Moving forward in wounding invites backfires, while moving forward in healing invites progress.

Using Hematite to Find Clarity and Truth

If you want to strengthen your discernment, which is really important in this time of misinformation, as we're being initiated into relying more and more on our intuition to see the truth, hematite is a wonderful stone to work with.

You’ll want to program your stone with a statement similar to mine: “Help me see the truth in all situations I come across today.”

Then, as you go about your days with this intention, don’t be surprised if you gradually begin to start reading between the lines faster when you interact with others.

That person who says one thing but means another? You may be able to pick up on it with your intuition. What a beautiful form of protection this is because it can help you see that someone means well even if what they said came across harshly, or it can protect you from ulterior motives that aren’t being revealed with words.

Of course, this intuitive strengthening doesn’t take the place of communication and interpersonal skills. If you’re picking up on something when interacting with someone you care about and trust, feel free to connect with them over it. Taking action to connect in this way when it’s safe to do so invites vulnerability, which can also strengthen your connection, which is another form of social and relational protection.

Need to make a decision and are feeling stuck? Meditate with your hematite programmed for clarity and truth and pay attention to what comes up for you. Notice if any pieces of information you find point you in a certain direction or lift some of the fog you’re experiencing.

As with much intuitive work, the hits will be subtle. You’ll want to lean into your inner knowing.

And remember, only take what resonates from this and use your judgment to make decisions that are right for you. The statements above are not scientific and are based on my experience. Yours may be different.

Grounding with Hematite

Lastly, you can use hematite to ground.

One good general rule of thumb when working with crystals is that darker stones can be used for grounding. However, the feel or type of grounding will be different depending on the other properties of the stone and the energies it can help you invoke. Grounding with hematite doesn’t feel as Earthy to me as grounding with black tourmaline, for example.

Since hematite is a metallic form of iron, it’s a dense stone. Density is the number one thing that helps us remain present in our physical bodies.

Grounding with hematite is a form of spiritual protection because it keeps you present, and it often calls the strength of the Earth into your body, reminding you that you are human, even if you are also a spiritual being at the same time. Without grounding, it’s harder to access your humanity. Without both grounding and humanity, you can’t embody and put forth spiritual concepts into physical being. Therefore, grounding is an important step in manifesting your desires.

Why I Love Working with Hematite

I love working with hematite, and I hope this guide helps you love it just as much as I do while deepening your spiritual practice.

At the end of the day, all the things you can do with hematite, you can also do without hematite, but a beautiful stone can be a helpful ally in doing the inner work and increasing your good karma. Whether you choose to wear it, hold it, or simply decorate the corner of a room with it, its energy is complex and worth working with.
